Golf is often described as a game of precision, but many of its most important decisions are really exercises in risk management. Should you attack the pin or aim for the middle of the green? Should you go for the green in two or lay up? Should you attempt the difficult recovery shot or accept the damage and move on?
The technically correct answer is rarely based on courage alone. It depends on probability, expected value, skill level, and the potential cost of failure.
That makes golf an interesting case study in human decision-making. Players may have access to statistics and course-management tools, yet emotions can still push them towards decisions that contradict the numbers. Understanding why that happens can help golfers make more systematic choices on the course.

The Psychology of the "Hero Shot"
The classic example is the hero shot: a low-probability attempt that could produce a spectacular result if everything goes perfectly.

Modern golf analytics provide a more sophisticated way to evaluate these decisions.
Strokes Gained, popularised through the work of golf statistician Mark Broadie, measures the value of a shot relative to a benchmark. Instead of simply asking whether a golfer hit a good or bad shot, it examines how that shot changed the player's expected score.
This creates a useful framework for targeting strategy.
A golfer might discover that repeatedly attacking difficult flags produces occasional birdies but also creates too many bogeys and double bogeys. Aiming towards the centre of the green may appear conservative, yet it can produce a better long-term scoring outcome.
The same principle applies to layup versus going for the green. The correct choice depends on the player's skill level, lie, distance, dispersion pattern, and the hazards surrounding the target.
A professional golfer and a high-handicap amateur should not necessarily make the same decision from the same position. Their probability distributions are different.
